Gather the Women

January 21, 2017

This is a poem I wrote for and have read at many Gather the Women events organized by the Women Creating Peace Collective. It feels appropriate to share it today as women gather in solidarity all over the world.

Gather the Women

Gather the women.

Weave our lives together
like thread, like cloth,
our skins skeins of many colors.

Gather the women.

Our hearts pound together,
creating a rhythm
we all know how to dance to.
Think of the glorious racket
of all of our hearts drumming
together for peace.

Gather the women.

When we inhale, we breathe
each other in. When we exhale,
we give ourselves back. This circle
of breath, this circle of giving
and receiving, sustains us.

Gather the women.

Together we can create
new worlds. We are fruitful.
We have the juice that
makes things happen, the juice
of birth, of transformation.

Gather the women.

Look at the beauty gathered
here today. Look at the energy
gathered here today. Such power
lives inside all of us. Such power
lives inside the community we create.

Gather the women.

Weave together our heartbeats,
our breath; weave together our
rich, complicated lives. Look at the work
of art we create together. Together
we create possibility. Together
we weave the most gorgeous future.
